AI is GREAT

Just to clarify, I am not being sponsored by any artificial intelligence company neither do I use any artificial intelligence in writing this, or any other blog posts I make within this website.

Introduction

In many academic circles; such as in university. I am surprised by the amount of students (mostly referring to undergraduates) that have distain towards artificial intelligence. Although there are negative implications of AI within academic circles and certain places in society, I believe that their (as in these undergraduates) are placing their distaste towards AI in the wrong place. To specify further, they do not like AI for the wrong reasons.

Despite this and aforementioned disadvantages, I firmly believe that artificial intelligence in regards to large language models such as ChatGPT are beneficial towards society as a whole.

I think that the general mindset and relationship people should have towards artificial intelligence is that it is a useful tool or aid in order to increase your productivity or to find solutions faster as a last resort, and it is important to not solely rely on AI in order to be productive. The main issue with anything is an unhealthy relationship towards something, and the sole reliance towards something can become unhealthy. For instance, if you need to rely on nicotine to do your daily functions, this would be referred to as an addiction.

Thus, a healthy relationship with AI is crucial to maximise its benefits.

Pros

To list all the benefits of AI towards other people would make this entire blogpost way too long, thus I will only provide the advantages that I personally gained with the aid of AI.

AI could help you further refine your learning, whether regarding a new topic or concept. Especially as a non-native English speaker and translation services have poor translation of Cantonese. AI has allowed me to translate material which is new or foreign to me in my own mother tongue in order to properly digest the content. Furthermore, AI could understand social cues, this allows me to properly translate concepts and ideas from my own mother tongue into English speakers which can help with further cultural understanding. AI could also help make complex concepts easier to understand and speed your learning process by generating examples that suit you which are accurate towards what you are learning. This speeds up learning and digesting of material.

AI can help with expanding your creativity or expanding on new ideas especially for people who want to make something. Humans ultimately can run dry of ideas, especially when we burn out. Instead of worrying AI taking over artist’s jobs. Artists could work alongside AI and use it to further their skillset or artwork portfolio, by basing ideas on what has been generated to further improve their art. I paint in my spare time, and sometimes I do have an idea which I want to do. However, sometimes you just can’t picture it correctly; put your finger on it. Therefore, AI would come in handy for providing several abstract examples, in which I could apply my own knowledge in order to create new works. I believe many people are in a similar situation like myself where they would like to create something, however they just can’t get it right. This is where AI would be a solution to this issue and opening the door for more people into the creative scene.

I would actually reverse the argument towards artists who are hostile towards AI, as I think this is just a way to reduce the amount of potential competition towards themselves if more people start to employ AI to help with ideas for their work. Which is selfish.

Lastly, AI can help with tedious tasks to improve and expand your workload. Tools like summarising a large piece of text (more than welcome to for my blogposts), generating files such as powerpoint scripts or excel spreadsheets with calculations already completed. Instead of manually doing the work yourself, you could ask AI to help do it for you. The point of doing something is getting from A to B the fastest. You can save minutes from hours by the use of AI doing such things, which is time you gain to either do further work or to rest.

Opinion

However, there are many issues that come with AI. Now, common issues with AI such as hallucinations where incorrect answers are provided with full confidence and potential for bias are all well known and will not be further discussed there. Also not to mention the early fears among AI such as deepfakes have already been extensively discussed and will not be elaborated further from here.

I also really do not care regarding the lack of human empathy within AI as it is foolish to expect that a bunch of rocks and metals that could calculate would be seriously empathetic towards a human, and also people who point out that AI kills creativity which is simply wrong as stated a few lines above.

Another foolish thing people worry about is “AI-slop”, I believe “AI-slop” is hilarious and has become part of our culture as of late 2024 and peaking within 2025. This has to be further studied but the general consensus among Gen-Z is that AI slop is so poor in quality that is blatantly obvious that it is “AI-slop” which as a result creates comedic value.

Cons

With that all said, I will state my concerns regarding AI. And to add, these concerns should be the main factors of young adults (18-24) as of writing this blog in 2025.

The recent price hikes for RAM and SSD’s is a main concern of mine, this is ultimately unfair for consumers as companies shift their priorities towards larger corporations. I am no socialist here and solely blaming late stage capitalism, neither this is a political issue and should not be branded as such. However, this also shows vulnerabilities in our supply chain and how important sustainability is for not only the market going forward, but the resources in which these RAM and SSD’s need to be powered with.

Privacy and security risks is another concern of mine. Ultimately, AI feeds on data to generate better results. Everything is collected. It’s sort of a catch 22 situation, where if you improve the privacy of AI services and collect less data from users, then the output would be unsatisfactory for the end user. Which would lead to less people using AI entirely. However, I believe there should be a balance or option that is provided towards the user in where they could opt from providing too much information. Obviously, the best solution towards this issue is for LLM’s to run offline and on your own hardware, or potentially a FREE and open source (heavy emphasis on FREE) alternative towards ChatGPT. However that is a stretch and very unrealistic. However, this does not excuse the blatant privacy violations by Microsoft’s Co-Pilot.

Lastly, over reliance is the largest concern of mine. People building par asocial relationships with LLM’s instead of finding actual human relationships is just sad, or the use of AI to mimic close ones who have passed away. These are man made horrors beyond my comprehension. As stated before, AI is just a tool used to improve your life, it is a powerful tool which should not be misused, or used to the point where you have grown a reliance on it to function basic tasks.

Conclusion

Suffice to say. There are many implications with the use of AI. It is a powerful tool that should not be misused, there should be further guidance from greater society and the creators of these models to educate peoples on how to use these tools properly and effectively to their benefit.
